Camellia Japonica – Royal Velvet
If you are looking to impress Royal Velvet Camellia may just be the shrub for you. It was named the camellia of the year for the 2023-2024 season by the American Camellia Society due to its winter hardiness. Produced in late winter and early spring the saturated, true red velvety petals of these large semi-double flowers surrounding prominent bright yellow center stamens against a background of lustrous, glossy dark-green leaves lend a “royal” air to any garden.
A very hardy, compact, vigorous upright to rounded habit plant growing to about 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide, it can be used in a number of applications in the landscape both as a shrub or small tree.
