Sango Kaku - Acer Palmatum
A beautiful, upright, large, slow-growing, vase-shaped form tree that typically grows over time to as much as 20-25’ tall. It is sometimes commonly called coral bark maple in reference to its distinctive, showy and magnificent bright pink, red bark which provides excellent color and contrast to landscapes in winter. Leaves that have five or seven ovate-acuminate lobes emerge a vibrant lush yellow-green with reddish margins in spring which fade as the leaves mature. This early red margin gives it a striking appearance during Spring. Leaves mature to light shade of green by summer. In the fall they are a beautiful bright gold-yellow with hints of apricot and light red splashed in contrasting magnificently with the warm color of the coral bark. Small reddish-purple flowers in spring are somewhat attractive viewed up close not showy from a distance. Flowers are followed by samaras that ripen in late summer to fall. As an accent tree it offers good size, good form, interesting seasonal color changes, and magnificent bark coloration in the winter months – being particularly noteworthy in snow!
