Arakawa – Acer Palmatum

Normally Acer Palmatum are known for their foliage. This unique, vigorous upright green Japanese maple however is valued for its prominent, deeply grooved , roughened, corky bark look, hence the plant’s alternative name of ‘Rough Bark Maple. The jagged roughness develops over 3 to 5 years as the juvenile growth matures. Slender, lobed leaves change to a dramatic bright and brilliant orange red in the Fall. With the added winter interest of the corky bark, Arakawa will provide  year-round interest to the garden and landscape. Prune to expose the trunk and main limbs as it grows, so that you emphasize the bark features all year round.
