Shishigashira – Acer Palmatum
A most desirable maple for small gardens, container culture and bonsai Shishigashira is a slow growing, compact, shrubby upright palmatum featuring thick bunched-up, heavily curled and layered unique green leaves that give for a most interesting texture. The name Shishigashira means lions head or lions mane , referring to the shape of the leaf bunches at the end of short, stout shoots. Green foliage color is maintained well in hot sun during the summer and is less likely to sunburn than other varieties. Fall colors can be stunning and striking combinations of golds, roses and oranges turning eventually to crimson tones. Small reddish-purple flowers appear in April and can be considered attractive when viewed up close. Flowers are followed by samaras that ripen in late summer to fall. Its bark ages a very pretty shade of yellow, being the brightest in the winter months.
